Tesla's Plan to Build a Mega Power Pack Plant in Shanghai: Why ?

Tesla, the leading electric carmaker in the world, has recently announced its plan to build a new battery factory in Shanghai, China. The factory will produce Tesla's Megapack, a large-scale energy storage product that can store renewable energy and supply it to the grid during peak demand. The Megapack is aimed at utility companies and commercial projects that need reliable and clean power solutions.

According to Tesla, the new factory will have an initial output of 10,000 Megapacks per year or about 40 GWh of energy storage. The construction is expected to start in the third quarter of 2023, and the production is slated to begin in the second quarter of 2024. Tesla said that the products from the Shanghai factory will be sold worldwide.

This is not the first time that Tesla has invested in China, the largest electric vehicle market in the world. Tesla already has a car plant in Shanghai that started producing Model 3 vehicles in 2019 and now has a capacity of about 20,000 cars per week. Tesla also plans to produce Model Y vehicles at the same plant.

So why did Tesla choose Shanghai for its new battery factory? And what are the benefits for both Tesla and China from this deal?

One possible reason is that Tesla wants to diversify its supply chain and reduce reliance on its existing battery factory in Lathrop, California. By having two factories in different regions, Tesla can mitigate the risks of disruptions caused by Supply chain issues, trade wars, or other factors. Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted that the Shanghai factory will "supplement output" from its California plant.

Another possible reason is that Tesla wants to tap into China's growing demand for energy storage solutions. China is one of the world's largest consumers and producers of renewable energy, but it also faces challenges such as grid instability, power shortages, and carbon emissions. Energy storage can help solve these problems by balancing supply and demand, enhancing grid reliability, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

By building a factory in Shanghai, Tesla can benefit from lower production costs, faster delivery times, and closer proximity to its potential customers in China and other Asian markets. Utilizing Chinese manufacturing capability and re-export globally is a good strategy.

In particular, the energy storage industry is transitioning to Lfp battery chemistry, mainly from China, for safe, low-cost, and long-lifecycle benefits. Tesla can also leverage its presence and reputation in China's electric vehicle sector to promote its energy storage products.

On the other hand, China will benefit from Tesla's investment in several ways. First, it can attract more foreign capital and technology to its energy storage industry, which is still developing and has room for improvement. Second, it can access Tesla's high-quality and innovative products that can help improve its energy security and environmental performance. Third, it can create more jobs and economic opportunities for its local workers and suppliers.

Tesla's plan to build a mega power pack plant in Shanghai is a strategic move that will benefit China and Tesla. Tesla is taping into a new revenue stream by expanding its global market share and diversifying its supply chain. At the same time,  China gets to boost its energy storage industry and achieve its green development goals.

Navigating Growth: A Strategic Evolution at Kinetic

When we embarked on the journey of creating Kinetic and developing the Trackboard.app, our vision was clear – to build a platform that truly catered to the needs of our customers. From the outset, we understood the importance of aligning our product with the real-world challenges faced by businesses. Our Minimum Viable Product (MVP) wasn't just a prototype; it was piloted with a paying customer. Initially, our goal was ambitious: to integrate program management, performance management, and talent management into one cohesive platform. However, the reality of being a bootstrapped company hit home, and we had to confront the luxury of time. Recognizing the need to prioritize and deliver value sooner, I engaged with potential customers and partners to identify where the pain points were most acute. To my surprise, and perhaps not-so-surprisingly, given my prior experience as a consultant, we uncovered a substantial gap in corporate strategy planning, programming, and execution. It was...

My Journey to Building a Leading Strategy Execution Platform

As an engineer by training, my journey to building and leading a Strategy Execution platform has been fascinating and transformative.  Throughout my college years, I immersed myself in the world of mechanical engineering, honing my technical skills and developing a deep understanding of complex systems. Little did I know that this foundation would serve as the launching pad for my future endeavors in the realm of strategy execution. My early career was dedicated to applying my engineering expertise to various projects, from designing innovative machines to optimizing production processes at Kia Motors. It was during this time that I first encountered the challenges organizations face when it comes to executing their strategic plans. I became increasingly intrigued by the gap between strategy formulation and its successful implementation. This gap often resulted in missed opportunities, unrealized potential, and, importantly, wasted human and capital resources. "It is estimated...

The Audacious and the Crazy Ones: Elon Musk, SpaceX, and the Power of Vision

There’s something about audacity that makes the impossible seem inevitable. When Elon Musk first declared his vision for SpaceX, many laughed. Reusable rockets? A private company challenging the dominance of established space agencies? It all seemed too far-fetched. But Musk pressed on, driven by the conviction that radical ideas often need time to be seen for what they truly are: revolutionary. One of SpaceX’s most iconic moments came when they landed the Falcon 9 booster back on Earth—an achievement that redefined the limits of space technology. But what happened recently marks another step towards redefining the future. Just this past week, SpaceX successfully caught the Lower stage of its Starship rocket with “chopsticks”—a giant mechanical arm designed to capture the descending rocket. The feat, once planned for early 2025, happened ahead of schedule, showing once again that Musk and his team are constantly pushing beyond what anyone thought possible. The image of those massive ...

Opening strategy and Competitiveness

Opening Strategy!  In their work, Chesbrough & Appleyard (2007) discussed emerging anomalies that are challenging the traditional business strategy process. The conventional business strategy approach was based on Porter's forces whereby firms create barriers and closure against new entrants to maintain competitiveness. However, recent events concerning modern businesses show no sustainable competitive advantages in industries but a continuous need for proficient business innovation and strategy (McGrath, 2013). As technology, competitors, and customers’ needs changes, the competitive advantage erodes and disappears. However, to maintain or sustain competitiveness, organizations must innovate with agility and a dynamic approach to the strategy processes to meet varying market demands (Doz & Kosonen, 2008). To this end, firms are beginning to pattern their business strategy and innovation using the open strategy approach in value creation with some success (Teece, 2010; Lued...

The Benefits of Strategic Mission Alignment for Organizations

I have been asked why organizations should take strategic mission alignment seriously. Here is my answer. Photo by Edz Norton Strategic mission alignment is a crucial aspect of organizational management. It involves aligning the organization's mission and goals with the actions and decisions of its employees. This alignment is vital because it ensures that everyone in the organization is working towards the same goals and objectives. This, in turn, can lead to several benefits for the organization, including increased productivity, improved efficiency, and tremendous success in achieving its strategic goals. Photo by Arjan de Jong One of the key benefits of strategic mission alignment is that it helps ensure that all employees work towards the same goals. It means increased collaboration and teamwork, directly or indirectly improving productivity and efficiency. Additionally, when employees work towards common goals, they are more likely to be motivated and engaged, leading to bett...

90% of strategy often fail, Why?

Yesterday, while dressing up my 3-year-old daughter Halona. I was slightly surprised when she asked me why the food was not working. To her, the food she eats ought to have given her everything to be as big and tall as her mum. I showed her the clothes she wore when she was a year old and asked her to try them on; they wouldn't fit (she was able to see the growth, a measure of success). I then assured her that she would be as big as Mama one day if she continued to eat good food and a balanced diet (strategy for growth). Come to think of it, most businesses are like Halona. Every business has a vision and mission. When organizations design strategies to implement their strategic goals, it's a no-brainer that they define a measure of success, usually for a quarter or a year (short to long-term strategic goals). Now imagine, what will happen to a business when they need to measure the effectiveness of its strategic plan without having efficient tools or processes to do it. It is...
